Moving screw dislocations in piezoelectric bimaterials

An explicit solution for a moving screw dislocation in a piezoelectric bimaterial is given by means of complex variables. The electroelastic fields and forces acting on the moving dislocation are obtained in closed form. As special cases, solutions for a moving screw dislocation in a piezoelectric half-plane with a free or rigid surface are obtained explicitly.

Fast-moving dislocations trigger flash weakening in carbonate-bearing faults during earthquakes

Rupture fronts can cause fault displacement, reaching speeds up to several ms(-1) within a few milliseconds, at any distance away from the earthquake nucleation area. In the case of silicate-bearing rocks the abrupt slip acceleration results in melting at asperity contacts causing a large reduction in fault frictional strength (i.e., flash weakening). Flash weakening is also observed in experim...

Time-resolved temperature rise in a thin liquid film due to laser absorption.

The temperature increase of a thin water layer is investigated, both experimentally and numerically, when the layer is heated by an infrared laser. The laser is focused to a waist of 5.3 microm inside a 28 microm gap that contains fluorescent aqueous solutions between two glass slides. Temperature fields are measured using the temperature sensitivity of rhodamine-B, while correcting for thermal...

A Formula for Simply Estimating Body Core Temperature Rise in Humans Due to Microwave Exposures

Biological effects due to RF whole-body exposure can be caused by core temperature rise. According to safety guidelines, therefore, whole-body averaged specific absorption rate (WBA-SAR) is being used as a metric for human protection. The threshold level causing thermal effects was determined based on animal experimental results. In order to investigate the relationship between WBA-SAR and core...

Amplitude-dependent Ultrasound Attenuation Due to Inclined Dislocations

Amplitude dependence of the ultrasound attenuation and change of the elastic modulus due to the dislocations with a certain number of the geometrical kinks at zero temperature is investigated by the numerical simulation of dislocation motion. A decrease of attenuation before the amplitude of stress in a slip plane achieves the Peierls stress value is found. 1. In spite of a long period elapsed ...
